Despite growing up in challenging circumstances, she was determined to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. Her academic excellence in matric earned her a scholarship from the Premier of the Eastern Cape, allowing her to study at her university of choice, the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Dr Mbungu's passion for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) was ignited during her fourth year of medical school. She was deeply moved by the plight of young patients with advanced cervical cancer, a condition that could have been prevented with early detection. This experience solidified her resolve to improve the healthcare system, particularly for women, and to empower them to take charge of their health.
After completing her MBChB at UCT in 2010, Dr Mbungu continued her medical journey, obtaining her FCOG (SA) in 2018 from the College of Medicine of SA and her MMed (O&G) from Stellenbosch University in the same year. Her dedication for reproductive medicine led her to specialize further, earning a Certificate in Reproductive Medicine (SA) with Cum Laude distinction in 2023 and pursuing an MPhil in Reproductive Medicine at Stellenbosch University.
Dr Mbungu's professional experience is extensive. She completed her internship and community service at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, followed by positions as a Medical Officer and Registrar in O&G at Groote Schuur and Tygerberg Hospitals. In 2018, she became a Medical Specialist at Tygerberg Hospital, where she also contributed as a lecturer in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Outside of her professional life, Dr Mbungu is a devoted mother to her teenage daughter and enjoys travelling, cooking, and staying active through gym training. She values self-care, ensuring she takes time for relaxation and a regular massage as well as daily meditation and prayer.
Dr Mbungu's journey from a young girl with a dream in a small village to a respected medical professional is a testament to her resilience, dedication, and commitment to making a difference in the field of women's health. She views medicine not just as a career but a ministry, driven by her faith and a deep love for people and giving hope.
