Every woman/ couple experiences pregnancy in their own unique way. Pregnancy brings a multitude of changes to a woman’s life, both physically and emotionally. This could in turn have either a positive or negative impact on the woman’s life and her partner.

Dr Noma Mbungu’s goal is to ensure your pregnancy journey is smooth, healthy, enjoyable and as memorable as possible. She achieves this goal by providing patient-centred care. She prides herself on providing individualized and respectful care to every patient she encounters. She strongly believes in evidence-based medicine and making sure that the patient/ couple is part of the decision-making process.

Dr Noma Mbungu offers comprehensive preconception care as well as routine and high-risk prenatal care for all patients during pregnancy:

  • Pre-conception care:
    • Pre-conception care aims to optimize the quality of care for both mother and baby and strives to prevent any complications during pregnancy.
    • During this period, Dr Noma Mbungu will focus on:
      • Addressing the risk factors that are already present prior to pregnancy to improve pregnancy outcomes. If any risk factors are identified and the patient is considered high risk, the pregnancy could put the mother or baby’s life in danger. Dr Noma Mbungu will then refer the patient to the necessary clinician to optimize the medical condition prior to conception. This is a multi-disciplinary care-based approach.
      • Specific counselling as well as health promotion information will be provided by Dr Noma Mbungu. Dr Noma Mbungu may also encourage some patients to start taking certain vitamins such as folate.
      • A pap smear will be performed if the patient has not had one prior to this and if one is indicated (according to national guidelines).
  • During Pregnancy and delivery
    • The minimum prescribed visits will be once every 4 or 6 weeks up to 36 weeks of pregnancy, depending on whether the patient is assessed as low or high risk. Thereafter patients will be seen at 38, 39 and 40 weeks of pregnancy unless not deemed clinically necessary by Dr Noma Mbungu.
    • More regular antenatal visits may be required as considered clinically necessary by Dr Noma Mbungu.
    • Necessary investigations such as checking for gestational diabetes mellitus (diabetes in pregnancy) and hypertension will be performed as indicated.
    • Dr Noma Mbungu offers 2D/3D/4D ultrasound. This will be done as indicated.
    • All patients are required to attend a follow-up with Dr Noma Mbungu at 6 weeks after the birth/ delivery.
